2012 ING New York Marathon Canceled

- Friday, November 2, 2012

Amid outcry to initially host the New York City Marahon just days after superstorm Sandy's aftermath, Mayor Michael Bloomberg canceled the Marathon this morning.   Earlier this week, New Yorkers and runners alike complained that going ahead with the 26.2 mile race would be insensitive and tie up crucial city resources.  Haf a million of NYC residents are still without ample food, water, and electricity.   Supplies from the race, including food, water and generators, will be redeployed to people who need it.

Marathons inspire, unify and bring communities together.  However at this time, it is more appropriate that the community is unified and focused on a recovery effort.  Having participated and finished the 2007 Los Angeles Marathon, the 2008 San Francisco Half Marathon, and the 2011 San Francisco Half Marathon, I feel empathy for all the runners would were scheduled to run this Sunday.  Training for complete a Marathon is a grueling 3-6 month process, and I hope that the runners, especially the first-timers, do not feel that their efforts were in vain.

An estimated 40,000 runners from all around the world were expected to take part in this Sunday's 26.2 mile race.  But not all is lost.  A charity called Race 2 Recover has been started to allow Marathon runners to donate their hotel rooms to displaced New Yorkers. If you are a runner, instead of canceling your room, please consider donating it.

Please donate to the American Red Cross online or text REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
